Understanding The Field Bet In Online Craps
If you look at the online craps layout, you will see a large area marked Field. The chips for the Field Bet have to be placed in this area. This article tells you everything that you need to know about this bet. One of the reasons of the popularity of the Field Bet is its simplicity. The bet can be placed at any stage in the game - before the come out roll or after the point is established. Also, the bet is decided in a single roll without the wager being carried forward.
First you must get acquainted with the Field box. It has the numbers 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11 and 12 listed in a row. These represent the total of the numbers on the two dice rolled. You will notice that the possible totals 5, 6, 7 and 8 have been omitted. The numbers 2 and 12 are circled. If any of the displayed numbers are rolled then the player wins and if any of the omitted numbers is rolled then the player loses. The numbers 3, 4, 9, 10 and 11 pay out at even money. The numbers 2 and 12 pay out at 3 to 1 and 2 to 1 respectively. This is the reason for circling 2 and 12. All leading games suppliers to online casinos, like Microgaming, offer these payouts. You may find some online craps games that offer payouts of 2 to 1 for both 2 and 12. Never play such online craps games.
Newbie craps players see that there are 11 possible numbers that can be rolled with two dice. Seven of these numbers result in the Field Bet winning. Four of these numbers result in the Field Bet losing. It would be incorrect for them to assume that the chance of winning is almost twice that of losing. The correct analysis has to incorporate how many ways each number can be rolled. The four losing numbers can be rolled in 20 ways and the seven winning numbers can be rolled only in 16 ways. Since 2 pays at 3 to 1 and 12 pays at 2 to 1 it is equivalent to 19 winning ways as against 20 losing ways. This gives a house edge of 2.7%.
There are other bets in online craps that have a lower house edge. But these bets are more complicated and not suited for newbie craps players. In any event 2.7% house edge is about the same for European Roulette and lower than that for online slot machines. So the Field Bet is not bad for starters.
